The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
